For ecotourism tours, most people recommend that you visit Manuel Antonio, a fairly popular tourist destination for such adventures. However, ask anyone who've been there and they will all tell you that, especially during the summer, Manuel Antonio can get a bit tourist-y because of the large number of tourists that flock to the area everytime. This has allowed Manuel Antonio to organize tourist destinations, though, giving it an edge over the others.
Still, if you're really not into seeing a lot of tourists and would rather see more plants and animals (this is the point anyway), then prepare to go somewhere else, such as the Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge & Lodge. The features here are a bit the same as with Manuel Antonio, but you get to see more plants and animals because it's nearer the rainforest section of the country. A plus factor would also be the fact that there are fewer tourists here than in Manuel Antonio!
There's a few drawbacks, though. In order to reach this 330-hectare property, you will have to do some rough land travel by two hours. Yes, it's really that rough riding through the dirt and the rocks through the date palm farms, but it's all worth it once you're already there. You have around seven kilometers of walking trails plus three kilometers of beach, as well as orchid and butterfly gardens. It's always a green day here.
If you're going to Costa Rica for a honeymoon, then this really is a recommended place for you, because you can get as much privacy and as much peace of mind as you want. Forget those countless tourists that usually stay around the Manuel Antonio area. You're bound to have a lot of fun here at Hacienda Baru.
