If you are a native to Alajuela or Costa Rica in general, what would be your top three pieces of advice for an American traveler?

Do not limit your response to nice things. If we get on your nerves, tell us what to do differently.

I'm not Tico but 21 years and I sure know a lot more about CR than most Ticos.

If you're city savvy CR is no problem.

I'f you're a country bumkin stay away from San Joseb and Limon...Jaco, Alejuela.

    Crackheads at night,,,Nuff said.

Jaco is a dump compared to places like Samara, M.Antonio,Bahia Drake etc.

Cahuita is the best area on the Carribean side.

Tilaran/Lake Arenal is where I live.

San Carlos, La Tigra, La Lucha, Chachagua and Florencia are The Real Costa Rica.

So are Bijagua, Upala, and Guatusu.

Alejuela has a zoo, nice plant nursuries and more crackheads than Miami.

Stay ON zoo road.. The rest of Alejuela is the armpit of the planet. So is SJ ( Mex city =)

The Orqiudeas Inn is a great place to stay if you are arriving late in San Joseb...If arriving at a decent hour. get your car, and get out to Costa Rica.

DO NOT drive at night.. No bandits.. just the roads, markers, dogs, cattle, bicycles, missing bridges etc.

If you get lost at night, during the week, and need directions you'll likely be getting them from a scumbag since most good Ticos crash early and awake early.

No. I DO love CR.. The greatest nation on Earth.

Pura Vida ! You'll love the place.

One final thing. Ticos earn 4-5K$/Year.

Your Camera or watch could be 10 years salary !

If you saw $250,000 sitting on a table, unattended, what would you do ? LOL

Most Amerikkans aren't smart enough to figure that out...leave valuables in the empire.. Too temping for even the most honest poor man with a large family.

Doug, you make some good points and you may know more about Costa Rica than most Americans...

But to claim "I sure know a lot more about CR than most Ticos" is a truly ignorant thing to say. I would say that all Ticos know more about Costa Rica than you do.

    Dear Doug,

I appreciate your candid answer. I think everybody visiting CR should read what you say. I, for one, can attest to some of the driving atrocities. I really do appreciate the info about the nightlife as it were. AND the suggestions for my next visit for REALLY good places in CR. Thanks again!
